When we experience trauma ( a distressing experience), our minds and our bodies are trying their best to just survive every day. When our trauma is not processed and healed, it shows up in our lives and can look like:
-Being easily startled or frightened
-Flashbacks
-Intrusive thoughts or memories
-Nightmares
-Distress when being reminded of traumatic events
-Trouble concentrating
-Troubles sleeping
-Irritability, anger, or aggression
-
Do you feel disconnected and experience challenges with being in the present moment? Do you feel like another part of you takes over in certain situations?
Sometimes when we experience stress and trauma, it is too much for our brains which can lead to the following:
Dissociation: disconnecting from reality-being detached from yourself and your emotions; memory loss, feeling like the world around you is not real
Depersonalization: feeling like you are detached from your body and/or your thoughts; feeling like you are watching yourself from outside of your body or you are watching the world through a fog
Derealization: everything around you feels surreal or dreamlike, like you're looking at the world but it doesn't seem quite real or familiar. It can make things seem distorted or like you're observing things from a distance, even though you're right there.
